New River, here we come! (next year)

For some time now, I'd been debating about whether I could manage another birding festival for the spring migration. Birding festivals ain't cheap, and I knew I couldn't do the fall migration this year because I'll be in Texas at my parents' 50th anniversary party. (I'm still hoping to get in a little birding time, as it's the same weekend as the Rio Grande Valley festival, but we'll be in San Antonio so I don't know what the birding will be like.)

I was thinking about Cape May in the spring, as I'd done the fall migration there last year. However, some members of the Flock started cheeping about going to a new place: New River Gorge in West Virginia. A bunch of emails, a couple of OCD planner-types, and some thorny algebraic calculations later, we've managed to figure out how a bunch of us can go to the festival!

You can find information on the festival here. The coolest part? Let me show you:

Yes indeed, Julie Zickefoose will be there! I had the birding experience of a lifetime last time I birded with Zick, and this time she'll be accompanied by hubby BT3, the darling children!, AND... CHET BAKER!

No, not THIS Chet Baker:

THIS Chet Baker:
Offisa Pupp!

Details to follow--but boy-oh-boy am I excited!

Holy crap - how cool is that?

Whenever I hear her on NPR or her husband, I think of you.

She may be the famous birder. You are MY birder.

I have been pondering adding you to my sidebar anyway, as official birder of FranIam.

Now I have to find that cute photo of you that you had posted recently.

That smile makes me want to sing.
(no not flirting, just loving you as you!)

Thank goodness SOMEONE remembers her algebra. Or all would be lost.

It's gonna be BIG fun, huh?

Sounds like it's all for the birds ....

Fran--gee, I was hoping you were flirting. I'm sure The Kat and Mr. HeIs would understand! ;) And I'd be honored to be your official birder!

Susan--no kidding. I'm embarrassed to say that I couldn't think of how to do it using algebra, despite my recent educational experiences. ...oh well!

Bunns--indeed!

This festival so muy cool! I did it in 2006, and was bummed I couldn't make it back in '07. Many great birds, terrific people, great food, beautiful scenery - and not a lot of rest! I can't wait till next spring to do it all over again.

If you think field trips with Zick are great, you gotta go "Birdin' with Bill." He is such an amazing trip leader, and so generous with his time. He puts out beaucoup effort to be sure everybody gets on every bird. And then, there is the now (in)famous Life Bird Wiggle.

Plus, you'll get to meet Fabulous Phoebe and Liam the WonderBoy - two greater kids I cannot imagine.

~Kathi, who loves the Thompson-Zickefoose clan

PS: Did I mention, a little black-and-white dog, the Mayor of Opossum Creek? Yeah, he'll be there, too.

Ever notice that the human Chet Baker and the canine Chet Baker have the same eyes? Soulful yet playful.

I'll be all over that Mayor.
