YES!

The polar bear has just been put on the endangered species list. Thank goodness.

Ma'am,

This is my third try at posting this--so if you get three answers that look about the same, blame Google.

Scarlet Tanagers are easy--you mentioned on Julie Z's blog that you hadn't seen one.

Just head south into the Bald Eagle State Forest and hike any of the ridgetop trails through mature trees in the morning over the next three weeks. They don't move around much, so you have to listen for the "p-toock" call and then just look around for the bright red bird!

Ref digiscoping--have you visited Aden Troyer's place over at Lost Creek? He "might could help."

Can we get an AMEN??????

Sorry but I have to disagree with you on the polar bears. Any species that goes from 5000 to 25,000 in ten years doesn't sound like it's endangered to me. All this really does is not allow for oil drilling in the ANWR.

Ornerypoint--welcome to the blog! Thank you for the tanager tip! I'm going to see one this year, darnit!

Susan--AMEN!

Richard--Thanks for coming by the blog. You mention that "all" this protection does; isn't that enough? Besides, in many areas the populations are shrinking. 25,000 is NOT a high number when we're talking about the entire population on the globe, and it's likely never going to go higher without protection. The bears have to be protected, as their numbers will continue to decrease as the polar ice breaks up thanks to climate change. They play a critical role as predators, balancing the numbers of seals and other prey animals. Protecting animals will always be a good thing in my book.

I danced around my livingroom when I heard.

I literally worry about them. Polar bears are at the top of the foodchain to be sure..but to me that makes them even more fragile.

Now, what will be done. Orca whales in Puget Sound are endangered ... not just threatened. But, how do you keep the metals from brake pads on the cars of 5 million people from washing into the Sound? Or slow down hundreds of big freighters so they don't whack them, when ime and money talks? Or provide them enough salmon to eat when shoreline habitat is taken by the mile every day?

Or stop the Arctic from melting?

Sigh ............

But the repubs want you to know that this in no way means they believe in global warming. I guess they think the bears have been killing themselves for pity.

Dusty--me too! The polar caps and ice areas are so fragile.

Rabbits' Guy--I know what you mean. It seems like whatever we do, it's just a drop in the bucket. But I'd rather make drops than just watch the empty bucket.

Pop--it's probably just peer pressure.
