First, we fished our little hearts out, but the fish were jumping around and taunting us.
You can't see them in this photo but trust me--they were jumping all over the place, eating every bug in sight but leaving our worms alone. Gretchen then switched to some shiny crazy lure, but did the fish pay attention?
See for yourself:
Now you DON'T see it.
Now you DO.
This crazy bullfrog (is it a bullfrog? I know, I need a amphibian guide!) wanted that little blue and silver lure more than anything! I guess he thought it was a dragonfly. Gretchen started playing with him, trying to lure him onto shore--but the crazy little guy chomped on it!
After some struggles getting the little hooks out of his mouth and leg, during which I sustained a little gash on my index finger,
Here's Gretchen the Frog Master:Boy, Laura was right; all fishermen have the same goofy grin when they catch something--even when it's a big old frog.
And her frog:
Now--for "fishing face." Kat took pictures of both Gretchen and I while we fished, and she claimed to have discovered something she calls "fishing face."
Here's her photographic evidence:
I tell ya, I just don't see it.
I don't know what she's talking about.

Oh yes. There is definitely a fishing face. It changes, depending on the luck, but it's there all right.
Great shots. Did you have frog legs for dinner instead of fish?
I love the fishing faces. Kat captured them all right.
What the hell- I have NEVER seen a frog that big! He looks pleased to have "caught" that tastey lure!
I checked out Susan's magazine cove. I swear Delia, that is THE CUTEST picture I've seen in ages.
(makes me want to pinch your teeny tiny cheeks)
;)
Definitely. You and Gretchen own the Fishing Face. It's all yours.
I'm so impressed with your bullfrog buddy - I haven't seen one that beefy before. Sweet - sorry you had to wrestle with him. LOL!
Kat is definitely on to something.
Fishing Face: I think it's that furrowed brow, that thousand-yard stare. I've seen it in person....Kat has captured the elusive "Where the Hell are all the fish?",
And, "What the Hell am I doing wrong?" look.
Killer bullfrog. You can tell a bull frog by that ridge behind their eyes going down the back of their heads. And the fact that, apparently they can grow to the size of house cats.
No activity really becomes cool until you bleed a little for it.
That was one impressive bullfrog. The first time I took my youngest fishing she caught a cricket and a frog from her wild casting.
Could almost be on disapproving rabbits!
Love the bullfrog moving in on the lure. I wonder how he/she will regard dragonflies after that?
I think catching that frog was worth more than any fish.
It could have something to do with the fishing face, which might be better named frogging face.
Your shots, as always, greatly add to the fun of the story.
I thought the fishy face was the one where you suck your cheeks in and wiggle your hands by your ears.
What do I know?
Did you ever think that it was the bullfrog who had the catch and release program?
"Yes, humans look like good eating, but actually there's a lot of gristle on them, and I don't mean the good kind."
I am chuckling--love those faces.
Now this is one cool fishing story. You gotta love it!

NCMtnWoman--nope. We're vegetarians!
Lynne--Still don't know what you're talking about with this whole "fishing face." And my cheeks were pinched into submission when I was a kid, so you can't do it! That frog was so big and cool!
D'oh--more replies:
Mary--he's definitely the biggest I've ever seen!
Dcup--don't know what you're talking about. La la la... la la...
Susan--I love bullfrogs! Thanks for the positive ID. (and I'll get my revenge on you for that "magazine cover," you mark my words!)
Bubs--I once caught a puffer fish in the Gulf.
Rabbits' Guy--frog disapproval!
EHunter--again--no such thing as "fishing" (or frogging) face, I tell you! tra la la... hmmm..hmmm...
Jess--exactly. And we were NOT making that face!
Matty Boy--perhaps he'll go back and tell his friends that.
KGMom--thanks. *blush*
Troutbirder--welcome to the bloggy! It was a lot of fun, especially with the frog.
I love the Fishing Face -- and those fish that jump all around you but never bite? I call those ... Brat Fish.
This is a fun post. I enjoyed it a lot. Great photographs. Great faces. Cool frog.
Glad you liked the Sea Oats photo.

PS:
I know why I haven't visited a lot lately. Your link in my sidebar disappeared. I will put it back in the "Nature Blogs" blogroll
Maybe she meant the fishes make a funny face...?
